NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVNL) will set up two green charcoal plants in Gurugram and Faridabad, Haryana. These plants will convert municipal waste into charcoal or green coal.
An agreement was signed between the NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited and the Municipal Corporations of Gurugram and Faridabad in Chandigarh in the presence of the Haryana chief minister, Nayab Singh Saini, and the Union Minister for Power and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar.
India’s largest waste-to-charcoal plant is in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and it can process 600 tonnes of waste daily.
Who will set up the Green charcoal Plant?
- NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVNL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, will establish the charcoal plant in collaboration with the Municipal Corporations of Gurugram and Faridabad.
- The NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited will set up the plant to convert municipal waste into green charcoa using indigenously developed technologyl.
- Both the MunicpalCorporations will provide 20 acres of land each for the plant.
- The urban waste collected by the two municipalities will be used as the raw material for the plant.
Cost, Place of the Plant and its Use
- The plant will be set up in Bandhwari, Gurugram, and Motuka in Faridabad.
- Each plant will cost Rs 500 crore.
- The combined capacity of the two plants will be to process 1,500 tonnes of daily collected waste materials into charcoal.
- The green charcoal will be used in power producing thermal plant which uses coal as a raw material. This will reduce the consumption of mineral coals and hopefully reduce pollution.
- This will promote urban cleanliness in these two cities and promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat campaign.

- NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited was set up by the central government-owned NTPC Limited in 2002.
- It is in the business of power trading, and the government of India has made it the nodal agency for the cross-border trading of power with Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal.
- The company also buys power from grid-connected solar power plants and sells it to consumers.
