The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs reviewed nationwide preparations for Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 in a high-level meeting chaired by Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal, bringing together State Urban Development Ministers and Mission Directors to finalize plans for this year's campaign.
This year's SHS campaign runs for a full month, starting on 17th September, the Prime Minister's birthday, and concluding on 17th October. The minister urged citizens to kick things off by cleaning their own homes on day one and lighting a diya that evening as a symbol of cleanliness and positive energy.
The campaign carries the theme 'Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat', spotlighting how collective participation drives the larger goal of a clean and developed India.
The drive centers on five priorities:
States have been asked to mobilise citizens for a mass voluntary cleanliness effort on 1st October: one day, one hour, together. Elected representatives, mayors, and local leaders have been called on to lead this effort from their own constituencies, with youth and sportspersons roped in through education and sports departments.
Urban local bodies will hold special council meetings and cleanliness drives at public places, along with advocacy on Solid Waste Management Rules. Tree plantation activities under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' will also take place on this day.
This date marks 25 years of the prime minister's public service, and states have been directed to organise dedicated cleanliness programs to commemorate the occasion.
Officials have been asked to focus on innovative outreach, sports events, Swachhata anthems, and consistent reporting to ensure the campaign delivers real, visible change and a lasting behavioral shift among citizens, well beyond the campaign's official end date.
