Delectrik Announced India's First 100 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Project at Khavda Solar Park

Delectrik Systems has announced India's first utility-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) project, with a storage capacity of 100 MWh. The project has been awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, in collaboration with Bondada Engineering Limited. It will come up at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, one of the world's largest renewable energy parks, targeted for 30 GW capacity by 2029. Deployment is scheduled for 2027.
Delectrik Systems is the technology provider, with NTPC REL as the client and Bondada Engineering Limited as the EPC contractor. Dr. Vishal Mittal, Founder and CEO of Delectrik, called it a milestone: India's first non-lithium utility-scale BESS project, fully designed, engineered, and manufactured domestically. Delectrik had earlier commissioned a smaller 3 MWh VRFB unit at NTPC's Greater Noida facility in 2025.
The project will use Delectrik's non-containerised VRFB architecture, built for large commercial, industrial, and utility-scale storage needs. Unlike lithium-ion systems, flow batteries offer a longer operational life, better safety, and are better suited to large-scale, long-duration storage.
This project pushes India's energy storage mix beyond lithium-ion dependence, cutting reliance on imported battery materials and reducing associated fire-safety risks. Long-duration storage such as VRFB helps stabilise the grid as renewable capacity scales up, especially at a mega-park like Khavda, where solar and wind output vary through the day. It also signals India's growing capability in domestic manufacturing of advanced storage technology, supporting the broader push toward self-reliance in clean energy infrastructure and the country's 2030 renewable energy targets.
