PM Modi Inaugurates Durgapur-Kolkata Stretch of PM Urja Ganga Pipeline

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Jagdishpur-Haldia and Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline section of the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) Project on 18 July 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Durgapur, West Bengal, on 18 July 2025, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for various development projects related to the power, oil and gas, road and rail sectors.

The following projects were inaugurated/ foundation stone laid by the Prime Minister in Durgapur, West Bengal on 18 July 2025.

Durgapur-Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline

• He dedicated the  Durgapur to Kolkata section (132 Km) of the Durgapur-Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline.
• The pipeline will provide natural gas to households, the industry, and the transportation sectors in the Purba Bardhman, Hooghly, and Nadia districts of West Bengal.
• It has been built at a cost of Rs 1,190 crores.

Pollution Control for Durgapur and Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station

• He dedicated the Retrofitting Pollution Control System-Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) of Durgapur Steel Thermal Power Station and Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station of Damodar Valley Corporation to the nation.
• Both are coal-fired thermal power plants that emit a high amount of sulphur dioxide.
• Sulphur dioxide is a major cause of air pollution and acid rain.
• The installation of the FGD will reduce the emission of sulphur dioxide from these thermal power stations.

Rail and Road projects 

• He virtually inaugurated the doubling of the Purulia–Kotshila Rail Line in Purulia, worth over Rs 390 crore.
• The 36 km rail line will reduce travel time between the industrial hubs of Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad with Ranchi and Kolkata and improve the logistics in the region.
• He also inaugurated two road overbridges built over a railway crossing under the Setu Bharatam Programme at Topsi and Pandabeshwar in Paschim Bardhaman.

About the Setu Bharatam Programme 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Setu Bharatam Programme on 4 March 2016 in New Delhi.

Aim 

• To build bridges on National Highways over/under the Railway crossing at the identified sites in high-accident-prone states, for a safe and seamless travel.
• To make all National Highways free of railway level crossings.

Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project 

It is also known as Jagdishpur–Haldia–Bokaro–Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL).

• Launched in 2016 by the government of India 
• It is a gas pipeline project that will connect five eastern states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Assam.
• It will supply natural gas to the industry, households, and the transportation sector situated along the pipeline route.
• Total length - 3,306 km
