History of National Vaccination Day:
The history of National Vaccination Day starts from 1995 because in the same year the Government of India had established the Pulse Polio Vaccination Programme for the first time with the aim of eradicating polio from the country.
The day commemorates the World Health Organization (WHO)'s global polio eradication initiative, which began in 1988. The first dose of oral polio vaccine was given in India on 16 March 1995.
The day marks the eradication of the highly infectious and deadly disease smallpox due to the massive vaccination programme led by WHO. The last known case of smallpox occurred on this day in 1975.
India started celebrating National Vaccination Day in honor of this huge achievement and the important role of vaccines in disease prevention. Since then, this day has started being celebrated globally.
