India has set up its maiden pavilion at the World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition 2024. The Pavilion was set up by the Union Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, and it was inaugurated by the Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, on May 12, 2024.

The World Hydrogen Summit 2024 is being held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from 13-15 May 2024. The Summit is being attended by 15,000 delegates from around the world..

World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition 2024

The World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition has been organised by the Sustainable Energy Council in partnership with the Netherlands government, the province of Zuid-Holland, the City of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam.

The 2024 World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition is the largest global green hydrogen event which seeks to promote the use of green hydrogen technology and green hydrogen based fuel in the world.

Indian Pavilion at Rotterdam

The Indian pavilion will showcase the progress made by India in the use of Green Hydrogen. The pavilion will also highlight the government policy in promoting green hydrogen and various steps taken by the government of India to promote the use of green hydrogen in India.

National Hydrogen Mission

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the National Hydrogen Mission on 4 January 2022. The government of India has approved an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore for the Mission.

The National Hydrogen Mission has set the following targets which are to be achieved by 2030 are as follows:

  • Development of green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) per annum,
  • 125 GW of renewable energy capacity addition,
  • Investment of over Rs. Eight lakh crore,
  • Creation of over six lakh jobs,
  • Reduction in fossil fuel imports over Rs. One lakh crore,
  • Reduction in nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions.

What is Green, Blue, Brown Hydrogen

The first element on the periodic table is Hydrogen. It is the smallest and lightest element in the periodic table.

Depending upon the production method used for the production of hydrogen, the colour of the hydrogen can be either Green, Brown, Blue or Grey.

Green Hydrogen

It refers to the breaking down of the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable sources of energy. Renewable sources of energy means which can be used again and again, like solar power, hydel, wind energy, etc. It contains no carbon, which is responsible for global warming.

Grey  Hydrogen

Grey hydrogen is created from methane or natural gas using steam methane reformation. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are produced using this method. The carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere while the hydrogen is captured and used.

Blue Hydrogen-

The process of creation of Blue hydrogen is similar to the Grey Hydrogen with the only difference being that carbon dioxide that is produced along with hydrogen is captured and stored. In Blue hydrogen, natural gas or coal gasification is used for the production of hydrogen.

Black and Brown Hydrogen

When black coal or lignite (brown coal) is used in the hydrogen-making process, it is called as black or brown coal.
