Sir Keir Starmer has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom by Monarch King Charles III on 5 July 2024 at Buckingham Palace in London. Sir Keir Starmer is the 58th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. 

Buckingham Palace is the official residence and office of the United Kingdom monarch.

Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party won a landslide victory in the recently held parliamentary election. He replaced the Conservative Party leader, Rishi Sunak, whose party badly lost the election. 

Sir Keir Starmer will be the new occupant of 10 Downing Street in London, which is the official residence and office of the United Kingdom's Prime Minister.

Labour Party sweeps Parliamentary election

The United Kingdom Parliament consists of two houses: the House of Lords, which is the upper house, and the lower house, the House of Commons. 

The House of Commons is the popularly elected house with 650 seats. The election to constitute the new House of Commons was held on 4 July 2024.

The Labour party has won 412 seats, with results on 2 seats yet to be declared.

The ruling Conservative Party, which had been in power for the last 14 years, won only 119 seats.

The Rishi Sunak government was deeply unpopular with the people, and his party suffered a humiliating defeat in the elections.

Constitutional System in the United Kingdom 

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary form of government. It is considered to be the mother of the parliamentary form of government, as the modern form developed there and is also known as the Westminster form of government.

The United Kingdom monarch is the head of the state, while the prime minister is the head of the government. 

The United Kingdom constitution is uncodified;it is partly written and partly follows the conventions.

The first prime minister of the United Kingdom and in the world was Sir Robert Walpole (1721-1742)
