‘International Day of Sports for Development and Peace’ (IDSDP) is celebrated every year on 6 April. It provides an opportunity to recognize the positive role of sport and physical activity in the lives of communities and people around the world.
Theme of International Day of Sports for Development and Peace 2024:
The theme of the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace this year 2024 is the global theme ‘Sport for the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies’.
Event organized at United Nations Headquarters, New York:
To commemorate this International Day, an event was organized at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 4 April. The event focused on how major sporting bodies engage in partnerships to make a positive impact on people.
The event was also attended by members of the international sporting community and members of the ‘United Nations Football for the Goals’ initiative. Many other things were also discussed in this programme, the main ones being as follows:

To discuss challenges
Bring positive social change
Explore collaborative opportunities to contribute to global efforts towards sustainable development and peace
The United Nations has acknowledged for a considerable time the potency and widespread appeal of sports. It was used to unite individuals and groups by supporting sports for development efforts.
have participated in events ranging from global level to grassroots level and developed their own sports-related campaigns and initiatives.
History of International Day of Sports for Development and Peace:
Recognizing the immense contribution of sport in promoting peace, development and well-being in the world, the UNGA adopted a resolution in August 2013.
This date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the first modern Olympic Games on 6 April 1896.
The first official celebration of this day took place on April 6, 2014.
To raise awareness of this potential, 6 April was declared by the UNGA as the IDSDP.
The adoption of this day reflects the growing recognition by the United Nations of the positive impact of sport on the advancement of human rights and social and economic development.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution (A/RES/67/296).
