The installed solar power capacity in the country has surpassed the 100 GW milestone and at the end of 31st January 2025, the total installed solar power capacity was 100.3 GW. This information was given by the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi in a social media post on 7th February 2025.
The government of India has set a target to achieve 500 GW of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel (renewable energy + nuclear) sources by 2030.
The renewable energy sources mainly include solar, wind, hydel, and wind power.
The contribution of solar energy to the total installed renewable energy capacity was 47%.
Highlights of the Solar Power Capacity in India
- In 2014 the total installed solar power capacity in the country was 2.8 GW which increased to 100.3 GW as of 31st January 2025.
- In 2024, 24.5 GW of solar capacity was added in the country.
- At present 84.10 GW solar power projects are under implementation.
Utility Scale Solar Installation
- The utility-scale solar installation refers to the large solar projects in which the electricity produced is fed to the electricity grid. The electricity distribution companies (called utility providers) sell the electricity to the consumers.
- In 2024, 18.5 GW of utility-scale solar capacity was added in the country.
- Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh were the top-performing states in utility-scale solar power installations.
Roof Top Installation
- In 2024, 4.59 GW of rooftop solar power was installed, a growth of 53% as compared to 2023.
- The credit is given to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana which was launched on 13 February 2024.
- PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a rooftop solar project that encourages households to install solar panels.
- These households receive 330 units of free electricity per month and the surplus electricity is sold to the utility provider.
Hybrid Solar Project
- Hybrid solar project refers to renewable energy projects that use both solar panels and wind turbines to produce electricity.
- a 64.67 GW project is under implementation in the country.
Solar Module Production
- In 2014, the total solar module production capacity in the country was around 2 GW.
- In 2024, the total solar module production capacity in the country was 60 GW.
- Target- 100 GW capacity by 2030.
