The Indian armed forces will for the first time participate in the “Bright Star military exercise 2023 to be held in Egypt . The Indian contingent will consist of a joint team of the Indian Army, Indian Airforce and the Indian Navy.
The Bright star military exercise is jointly conducted by the Egyptian and the American forces, every two years . It will be held from 31st August 2023 to 15 September 2023.The Bright Star military exercise 2023 will see a participation of 34 countries. Countries from West Asia, North Africa, Europe will participate in the exercise .In the last 2021 Bright Star military exercise 21 countries participated in the exercise .
Under the Bright star exercise, participating countries are made a nodal agency for a subject . India has been made a nodal country for cyber security .
Focus of the Bright Star military exercise 2023
The Bright Star military exercise will focus on understanding the newly emerging global conflict trends, enhancing interoperability in Counter Insurgency/ Counter Terrorism Operations under the UN mandate and carrying out joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations.
The focus is to share best practices, enhance coordination and cooperation between the forces at tactical level.
India-Egypt ties and defence cooperation
India and Egypt, two of the world’s oldest civilizations, have enjoyed a history of close contact from ancient times. Both countries enjoy close political relations and were the founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) .
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was the chief guest at the 2023 Republic Day celebrations .
Egypt has been invited as a Guest country during the G-20 summit to be held in New Delhi in September 2023.
Defence relations between India and Egypt
India and Egypt enjoy a cordial defence relation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Egypt in September 2022 and an Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two countries.
Both the countries cooperated in jointly developing fighter aircraft in the 1960s. IAF pilots also trained Egyptian pilots from the 1960s until 1984.
Egypt participated in the Multinational Training Exercise for friendly African countries held at Pune in March 2019.
The first ever Indian Airforce and Egyptian Air Force Joint Tactical Air Exercise, Desert Warrior, was held in Egypt from 29-31 October 2021.
The first joint exercise between Special Forces of India and Egypt titled ‘Exercise Cyclone’ was held at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan from 14-27 January 2023 in India.
First ever Air to Air refuelling exercise between IAF and EAF held in Cairo in May 2023.
