'Good Governance Day' is celebrated every year on 25 December, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The purpose of this day is to create awareness among the citizens of India about the accountability of the government.

  • In 2023, the 99th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee is being celebrated. On this occasion, the President, Prime Minister and many other dignitaries of the country paid floral tributes at his memorial 'Sadaiv Atal'.

History of Good Governance Day: 

  • On 23 December 2014, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the late Madan Mohan Malviya were honoured with Bharat Ratna. Also, 25th December, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday, was declared Good Governance Day. Good Governance Day was inaugurated on December 25, 2014.
  • The organisation of Good Governance Week was started in 2021. The first Good Governance Week was organised from 20 to 26 December 2021. The third ‘Good Governance Week’ (19 to 25 December) was celebrated this year.

Major events on Good Governance Day 2023:

  • Many programs are being organised in the country on this occasion. Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Jitendra Singh, inaugurated Good Governance Day in New Delhi.

Major programs launched on this occasion: 

  • Launched 3 new features on iGOT Karmayogi platform My iGOT, Blended Program and Curated Program.
  • Launched 12 domain-specific e-learning capacity-building courses as part of the Annual Capacity Building Plan (ACBP) of DoPT.
  • Launched VIKAS (Variable and Immersive Karmayogi Advanced Support) capacity-building program for middle management personnel.

About My iGOT:

  • It is a digital learning program that provides targeted training courses on the official's home page. It directly addresses the capacity building needs of the officer as identified in the capacity-building plan for their departments.
  • This facilitates highly individualised, focused and targeted capacity-building. This ensures a connection between individual and organisational proficiency needs.

About the Blended Programme:

  • This on the iGOT-Karmayogi platform will facilitate equitable access to training modalities at all levels to meet the dynamic training needs of officers.
  • These combine traditional offline (in-person) classroom courses with online learning components.

About the curated program:

  • iGOT on Karmayogi is designed to meet the diverse learning needs of departments and training institutes.
  • Course providers will be able to curate relevant content, resources and assessments from iGOT with a programmatic approach to provide a tailored learning journey.
  • Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched DoPT's Annual Capacity Building Plan (ACBP) on 27 September 2023.
  • It is a hybrid program with VIKAS, i.e. VIKAS iGOT. It focuses on the development of functional, behavioural and technical competencies required by the Central Government.

About Karmayogi Digital Learning Lab (KDLL):

  • KDLL was inaugurated by the Minister of State (PP) in August 2021 to develop e-learning courses for the capacity building of civil servants.
  • KDLL aims to build a civil service for the future with the right attitude, skills and knowledge aligned with the vision of New India.

About Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

  • AB Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in the family of a school teacher living in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Indian politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee was India's 10th Prime Minister (individual).
  • AB Vajpayee was the Bharatiya Janata Party's first leader to become the country's Prime Minister.
  • AB Vajpayee served as the Prime Minister of India for three terms.
  • Became Prime Minister for the first time in 1996 for a period of 13 days, second time for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999. Became Prime Minister for the third time for a full term from 1999 to 2004.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on 16 August 2018 at the age of 93.
