According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau, Delhi has recorded the highest number of cases of crimes against women at 14,158 among the 19 metropolitan cities of India in 2022.

  • After Delhi, 6,176 cases were reported in Mumbai and 3,924 in Bengaluru.
  • According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 1,204 rape cases were reported in Delhi in 2022. Also, 129 dowry death cases were registered in the year 2022.

Criminal Incidents:

  • According to the report, a total of 58 lakh 24 thousand 946 crimes were registered in the country last year, which includes 35 lakh 61 thousand 379 crimes under IPC and 22 lakh 63 thousand 364 crimes under special laws of the state.
  • In criminal cases, Uttar Pradesh is first in the entire country, Maharashtra is second, while Madhya Pradesh is third.
  • Delhi tops the list of recorded crime cases among cities, followed by Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Cases registered under IPC:

  • Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of cases, i.e. 4 lakh 1 thousand 787 registered under various sections of the IPC, followed by Maharashtra at second place with 3 lakh 74 thousand 38 cases of crime and Madhya Pradesh at third place with 2 lakh 98 thousand 578 cases of crime.

Maximum cases of murder:

  • The highest number of murder cases, 3491, have been registered in Uttar Pradesh, followed by 2930 cases in Bihar and 2295 cases in Maharashtra.
  • Delhi has the highest number of murder incidents among cities.

Maximum cases of kidnapping:

  • Maximum 16 thousand 163 cases of kidnapping have been registered in Uttar Pradesh, followed by 12 thousand 260 cases in Maharashtra and 11 thousand 822 cases in Bihar.
  • Delhi stood first and Mumbai second in terms of the highest number of kidnapping incidents among cities.

Maximum cases of Pasco:

  • According to the report, a maximum of 20 thousand 762 cases of child exploitation (POCSO) has been registered in Maharashtra.
  • After this, 20415 crimes were registered in Madhya Pradesh and 18682 crimes were registered in Uttar Pradesh.

Other main points of the report: 

  • According to the NCRB report, there has been a decline in crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SSL). According to the report, the registered crime rate per lakh population has decreased from 445.9 in 2021 to 422.2 in 2022.
  • In 2022, 10 thousand 295 children under 18 years of age committed suicide. Of these, the number of boys was 4616, while the number of girls was 5588.
  • There has been a 2.6 % decrease in murder cases in 2022 compared to 2021.
  • Cases related to financial fraud increased by 11.1 %.
  • Cyber crime increased by 24.4 %.
  • An 8.7 % increase was seen in incidents of child abuse.
  • 28 thousand 545 cases of harassment of elders were registered.
