Jasprit Bumrah and opening batswoman Smriti Mandhana have been named as the ICC Male and Female Player of the Month for June, respectively. This was announced by the sports governing body, the International Cricket Council(ICC), on 9 July 2024.
In January 2021, the ICC instituted the monthly award for the best male and female cricketer in the world, taking into account their performance in that particular month.
Jasprit Bumrah beat fellow Indian and team captain Rohit Sharma and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz for the ICC Player of the Month for June award.
Jasprit Bumrah was rewarded for being one of the architects of the Indian team, which won the 9th ICC Men’s T20 World Cup jointly hosted by West Indies and the United States of America. He was the player of the tournament for his terrific bowling performance. Jasprit Bumrach took 15 wickets at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17.
Bumrah became the second Indian player after Virat Kohli to bag the Player of the Tournament award in an ICC T20 World Cup.
Virat Kohli is the only player in the world to be named player of the tournament in the T20 World Cup twice. He was the player of the tournament in the 2014 and 2016 editions.
Smriti Mandhana won her first ICC Player of the Month award. She edged out England’s Maia Bouchier and Sri Lanka’s Vishmi Gunaratne for the award.
Smriti Mandhana, one of the world's best opening batswomen, was rewarded for her performance against the visiting South African side in the One-Day Internationals(ODI) and Test Match. In the three-match ODI series, India beat South Africa 3-0, with Mandhana scoring two centuries and an inning of 90.
In the lone test match, she scored a century against the Proteas to help India win by 10 wickets.
