Indian men’s cricket Test team vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah has been honoured with the 2024 Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year Award and the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Award.

Fellow Indian pace bowler Arshdeep Singh was selected for the ICC Men’s T20 International Cricketer of the Year Award and Smriti Mandhana was chosen for the ICC Women’s ODI (One Day International) Cricketer of the Year Award.

The annual ICC Awards was announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) at its headquarters in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

ICC awards honours 12 individuals for their performance in all three formats of Test, One Day Internationals(ODI) and T20 Internationals (T20I). 

The performance of the men and women players and umpires during the 2024 cricketing season has been taken into account while selecting the players for the ICC Awards.

Jasprit Bumrah Shines at  2024 ICC Awards 

Jasprit Bumrah became the fifth Indian cricketer after Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016) and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018) to receive the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year Award.

Performance of Bumrah in 2024

Jasprit Bumrah had a stellar 2024 cricketing season. 

  • He played a key role in India’s victory at the 9th ICC T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and the USA. During the World Cup campaign, he took 15 wickets at a stunning average of 8.26 with an economy rate of just 4.17, fetching him the Player of the Tournament award.

His performance in the Test matches was even better.

  • Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker in Test matches in 2024. He picked 71 wickets with an average of 14.92 in 13 test matches. 
  • He was far ahead of English fast bowler Gus Atkinson who took 52 wickets in 11 Test matches.
  • Jasprit Bumrah is the fourth Indian bowler after Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev to take 70 or more test wickets in a calendar year.
  • In the history of the games, none of the 17 bowlers who have taken 70 or more wickets in a calendar year has such a low average as Bumrah.
  • Jasprit Bumrah, the current No.1 ranked bowler in the ICC Test Rankings became the fastest Indian fast bowler to reach 200 Test wickets with a bowling average of below 20. No pace bowler in the history of the game has achieved this feat with such an average.
  • Jasprit Bumrah also finished the year with a record-breaking 907 points which is the highest for any Indian bowler in history.

ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year-Smriti Mandhana

Smriti Mandhana had a phenomenal year in the One Day International (ODI) in 2024. She scored 747 runs in 13 innings at an average of 57.86 and was the leading run-scorer in the format in the world.

She set a new record in the women's ODIs by scoring four centuries in a calendar year.

ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year -Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh who made his international debut in 2022, finally established himself as the premier Indian bowler in the T-20 format in 2024. 

He was the leading wicket-taker for India in T20 Internationals in 2024 with 36 wickets in 18 games with an average of just 15.31. He played a crucial role in India winning the 2024 ICC Men’s T-20 World Cup.

International Cricket Council (ICC)
