JEE Advanced 2021 Eligibility Criteria

JEE Advanced is conducted annually by one of the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) namely IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee or Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore by the Joint Admission Board (JAB). Admissions to Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programmes (entry at the 10+2 level) in all the 23 IITs, including the Indian School of Mines (ISM) are done based on ranks obtained by candidates in JEE Advanced. 

The candidates who are planning to appear in this exam must have complete knowledge of the JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria as only the candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria can appear in the exam and later join the college of their choice. 

In this article, we will discuss the complete eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 

Performance in JEE Mains

Candidates who make it to the top 250000 ranks in JEE Mains across all categories are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. The reservation among these ranks is as given below:

  • General category candidates (from the common merit list) – 46.5% 
  • General EWS – 4%
  • OBC-NCL candidates – 27%
  • SC candidates – 15% 
  • ST candidates – 7.5%
  • PWD candidates – Horizontal reservation of 5% in all the above categories

Age Limit

For JEE Advanced 2021, the candidates should be born on or after October 1, 1996 (less than 24 years old). However, SC, ST and PwD candidates will get a relaxation of 5 years (born on or after October 1, 1991).

Number of Attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced exam for a maximum of  two times in two consecutive years.


The candidate appearing in this exam must have passed Class XII or equivalent exam for the first time in 2020 or 2021. Candidates must have secured a minimum of 75% aggregate in Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PWD marks should be at least 65%

Candidates should be within category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination. 

If the candidates fulfill the above-given criteria, they are eligible to appear in the JEE Advanced Exam. However, the difficulty level of the exam is very high and the candidates need to have a very strong preparation in order to ace it. The candidates can also take help from a JEE Online Course to strengthen their preparations.
