Tamil Nadu has achieved a record breaking achievement of $9.56 billion in electronics exports in the financial year 2023-24. This accounted for approximately one-third (33%) of the total national electronics exports share.

Tamil Nadu doubled exports from last financial year: 

  • Tamil Nadu's share of electronics exports has almost doubled to $5.37 billion in FY 2022-23.
  • State Industries Minister Dr. TRB Rajaa tweeted that the electronics sector in Tamil Nadu is gearing up its capabilities, aiming for another record achievement next year.

Position of other Indian states in electronics exports:

  • Karnataka has exported approximately $4.6 billion in electronics exports. This export of Karnataka is half that of Tamil Nadu. Karnataka accounts for about 16% of total national exports. Karnataka ranks second in the list of top electronics exporting states.
  • Karnataka is almost at par with Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh has exported goods worth $4.46 billion. Uttar Pradesh achieved 15.32% share of national electronics exports. The position of top states in electronics exports in FY 2023-24 can be seen in the following table:

Engineering products are the biggest export items of TN:

  • It is the largest export item of Tamil Nadu after engineering products. Its exports were about $17 billion in the financial year 2023-24. Along with this, other items exported from Tamil Nadu mainly include:
    • Readymade garments at $4.7 billion
    • Cotton yards and fabric at $2 billion
    • Leather and leather goods at $1.66 billion fall among the top five export categories for the state.

Tamil Nadu ranks third in the country in total exports:

  • Tamil Nadu's total exports in FY 2023-24 were worth $43.55 billion, of which electronics and engineering goods comprised about 62%.
    • Gujarat ($134.4 billion) and
    • TN is India's third largest exporter after Maharashtra ($67.2 billion).

National Scenario in Electronics Exports:

  • India's electronics industry has registered significant growth in exports. Reaching $29.12 billion in fiscal year 2023-24, a substantial increase of 23.6% over the previous year. This increase assumes special significance amidst the 3% decline in India's total exports.

  • According to the Central Commerce Department, Government of India, India's top export destinations of electronics goods include:
    • The United States of America
    • United Arab Emirates
    • Netherlands
    • United Kingdom
    • Italy.
