The government of India has appointed Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal as the new  Chairman for the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). He was earlier a member of CBIC.

Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal , a 1988 batch Indian Revenue Service officer (IRS), will replace Vivek Johri who retired as the Chairman of CBIC. 

Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal has also been accorded the status of special secretary to the government of India .

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC):

  • Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs  is a part of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

  • The name of the department was changed from Central Board of Excise & Customs  to Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs in 2018 after the passage of Finance act 2018.

  • It deals with the tasks of formulation of policy concerning levy and collection of Customs, Central Excise duties, Central Goods & Services Tax and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST).

  • It also deals in prevention of smuggling and administration of matters relating to Customs, Central Excise, Central Goods & Services Tax, IGST and Narcotics to the extent under CIBC's purview.

  • The Board is the administrative authority for its subordinate organizations, including Custom Houses, Central Excise and Central GST Commissionerates and the Central Revenues Control Laboratory.
