PM Modi inaugurates the 2nd Annual SEMCON India 2023 in Gandhinagar

PM Modi inaugurates the 2nd Annual  SEMCON India 2023 in Gandhinagar Science and Technology 3 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2nd 'Semicon India 2023' on 28 July 2023 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The three day  (28-30 July 2023) SEMCON India 2023 is being organised by the India Semiconductor Mission in partnership with industry and industry association to make India a global hub for Semiconductor design, manufacturing and technology development. The first SEMCON India was held in Bengaluru in 2022.

Theme of the Semicon India 2023

  • The theme of the Semicon India 2023 is 'Catalyzing India's Semiconductor Ecosystem' at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar.

More than 8,000 persons from over 23 countries including industry leaders from major global companies such as Micron Technology, Applied Materials, Foxconn, Cadence and AMD, and the industry association, SEMI participated in the Semicon India 2023.

During the conference Sanjay Mehrotra, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the  American company Micron announced to invest around $400 million in India over the next five years. The company will set up its largest design centre in the tech hub of Bengaluru. 

India Semiconductor Mission (ISM):

  • ISM was launched in the year 2021 under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology with a financial outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.

  • It aims to provide financial support to companies investing in the semiconductor, display manufacturing and design ecosystem.

Semiconductor:

  • Semiconductor is a material which has a conductivity in between the conductivity of good conductors and bad conductors.  Semiconductors can be pure elements, such as silicon or germanium, or compounds such as gallium arsenide or cadmium selenide

  • It is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of electronic devices, including diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits.

  • They are also used as various components in power devices, optical sensors and light emitters, including solid-state lasers.
