The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering(NIM) Uttarkashi and Patanjali Ayurveda Haridwar have jointly launched an expedition to the Horn of Harsil peak to search for rare medicinal plants.
The 30 member team is led by Acharya Balkrishna of Patanjali Ayurveda and the Principal of NIM Colonel Anshuman Bhadauria.
Last year NIM and Patanjali Ayurveda Haridwar launched a similar expedition to the peaks of Gangotri glacier.
The 30 member team includes mountaineering instructors, botanists and scientists to find, and catalogue rare medicinal plants in the region.
Himalayas are blessed with rare medicinal plants which have medicinal properties and many of the Himalayas region are yet to be fully explored.
The Horn of Harsil is a group of two mountain peaks located in the Hasil valley of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.The mountain peaks look like the horns of an animal.
The mountain peak is situated at an altitude of nearly 4,800 metre and 5,300 above the mean sea level in the Harsil area of Bhatwari block.
The mountain takes its name from the Harsil village also known as Switzerland of India,situated along the banks of river Bhagirathi and is surrounded by mountains on two sides.
The mountain is part of Garhwal Himalayas and is a popular destination for trekking and mountaineering expeditions.
The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) was set up by the Union Ministry of Defence and the Uttar Pradesh Government (now Uttarakhand government) in 1965. At present it is located in the Ladari Reserve Forest, Uttarkashi, Uttrakhand.
The NIM was set up as a world’s leading centre of mountaineering and adventure training institute with an eco-friendly outlook.
The President of the NIM is the Defence minister of the country and the Uttarakhand chief minister is the Vice -President
The NIM is headed by a Principal appointed by the union Defence ministry .
