Nalin Prabhat becomes the new chief of National Security Guard Appointment 4 min read

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Nalin Prabhat has been appointed the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG), the country's counter-terrorism and counter-hijack force. 

  • Nalin Prabhat is a 1992 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. Nalin Prabhat is currently serving as the Additional Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • According to the order issued by the Personnel Ministry, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has appointed Nalin Prabhat as NSG Director General till August 31, 2028.
  • Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) chief Daljit Singh Chaudhary was holding additional charge of NSG.

Sapna Tiwari becomes special director of Intelligence Bureau (IB):

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has also approved the appointment of Sapna Tiwari as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
  • Sapna Tiwari is a 1992 batch IPS officer of Odisha cadre. Presently Sapna Tiwari is working as Additional Director in IB.
  • Presently the Director of IB is Tapan Kumar Deka.

About National Security Guard (NSG):

  • NSG was established in 1984.
  • The National Security Guard was established as an anti-terrorism unit. NSG came into existence by an Act of Parliament – 'National Security Guard Act, 1986'.
  • The idea of setting up NSG came in 1984 after Operation Blue Star, the attack on Akshardham temple and the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • The main objective of establishing NSG has been to protect the states from internal disturbances and to combat terrorist activities.
  • NSG works under the Home Ministry. It has two complementary elements:
    • First, the Special Action Group (SAG) comprising army personnel – is the main offensive or strike wing of the NSG;
    • Second, the Special Ranger Group (SRG) comprising personnel drawn from Central Armed Police Forces/State Police Forces. These generally provide protection to VIP securities.
  • The head of the NSG is designated as the Director General (DG). It is selected and appointed by the Home Minister.
  • NSG's motto: 'Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha'.
  • NSG as a federal contingent force has been given the specific role to deal with all aspects of terrorism in any part of the country.

About Intelligence Bureau (IB):

  • The IB is India's internal security and counter-intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was established in 1887 as the Central Special Branch. It is considered to be the oldest organization in the world.
  • By 1968, the IB handled both domestic and foreign intelligence.
  • After this, the Research and Analysis Wing was formed specifically for foreign intelligence.
  • Subsequently, the IB was primarily given the responsibility of domestic intelligence and internal security.
