The Union Cabinet approved the inclusion of Jamrani Dam multipurpose project in Uttarakhand under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP).
The Central assistance for the project will be in the proportion of 90 per cent (Centre):10 per cent (state) for the balance works components of the project under PMKSY-AIBP.
About Jamrani Project
The project envisages the construction of a dam near Jamrani village across river Gola, a tributary of river RamGanga, in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,584.10 crore, including Rs 1,557.18 crore Central assistance to Uttarakhand.
The project is scheduled to be completed in March 2028. It will enable additional irrigation of 57,000 hectares in Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand, as well as Rampur and Bareilly districts of Uttar Pradesh.
In addition to this, 42.70 million cubic meter (MCM) of drinking water to Haldwani and nearby areas will be provided through the project, benefitting more than 10.65 lakh population.
About Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)
Launched on July 1, 2015 Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) has motto of "Har Khet Ko Paani". The PMKSY aims to expand cultivated areas with assured irrigation, reduce water wastage, and improve water use efficiency.
PMKSY aims to create both assured and protective irrigation through "Jal Sanchay" and "Jal Sinchan" at a micro level by harnessing rainwater.
Micro irrigation is also promoted through subsidies to ensure "Per drop-More crop".
Following schemes are merged into PMKSY scheme namely the:
Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR,RD&GR).
On Farm Water Management (OFWM) of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC).
Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) of the Department of Land Resources (DoLR).
Ministries of Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Development. is implemeting the scheme.
Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme
In 1996-97, the Central Government introduced the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) to support Major/Medium Irrigation (MMI) projects in India.
The aim was to speed up the implementation of projects that were already in the advanced stage of completion by providing Central Assistance (CA). After the launch of PMKSY, the AIBP was merged with it.
