Former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief Dr K Sivan has been appointed the new Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Indore, giving him a bigger responsibility in Madhya Pradesh.

According to IIT Indore Director Suhas S Joshi, the tenure of the new Chairman of the Board, K Sivan, will be for three years. Dr. Sivan will replace the current Chairman, Dr. Deepak Phatak.

  • It is noteworthy that IIT Indore has started B.Tech Space Technology this year and research is going on in space science.
  • In such a situation, IIT Indore will be able to benefit from Dr. Sivan's long experience in the field of space and aeronautics engineering.
  • Under the guidance of Dr. Sivan, there was speed in developing the design and mission simulation.
  • He also laid emphasis on education along with research in space science and engineering. Indore IIT is also working on this possibility.

Dr. K Sivan:-

  • Dr K Sivan was born on 14 April 1957 in a farmer family. His father's name is Kailasa Vadivu and mother's name is Chellam. Dr. K Sivan's wife's name is Malti Sivan (Housewife). Sivan has two children, Siddharth Sivan and Sushant Sivan.
  • Sivan did his schooling from a Tamil medium government school in Mela Sarakkalvilai village. He later did B.Sc. from South Travancore Hindu College, Nagercoil. Sivan became the first graduate in his entire family.
  • Dr. Sivan has expertise in Aerospace Engineering. Sivan completed his engineering from IIT Madras in 1980 and then obtained a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1982.

Dr. K Sivan Achievements:-

  • Dr. K Sivan joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in the year 1982 after graduating from the Madras Institute of Technology. During his tenure at ISRO, he obtained his Doctorate of Science (PhD) in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Mumbai in 2006.
  • Dr. Sivan is a fellow member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Aeronautical Society of India and Systems Society of India.
  • Dr. Sivan has received many awards, some of the important ones are as follows:-
  • Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (1999)
  • ISRO Merit Award (2007)
  • Biren Roy Space Science Award (2011)
  • Madras Institute of Technology Alumni Association,
  • Distinguished Alumnus Award from Chennai (2013)
  • Was awarded Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by Sathyabama University, Chennai in 2014.
  • Distinguished Alumnus Award from Bangalore (2018)
  • Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Award (2019) from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Dr. Sivan with ISRO:-

  • He joined ISRO in the year 1982 with the PSLV programme.
  • Sivan was the chairman of ISRO from 2018 to 2022. He was in charge of the Chandrayaan-2 mission launched on 22 July 2019. He is an expert in aerospace engineering, space transportation systems engineering, launch vehicles, mission design, control, guidance design, mission simulation software design, mission synthesis and flight systems.
