SBI chairman Dinesh Khara's tenure has been extended till August 2024 by the government of India . The Appointment Committee of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 5 2023, has extended the tenure of the State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Dinesh Khara for a period beyond October 2023 till he attains 63 years of age.

Dinesh Kahra will now retire on August 28 2024.

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet consists of the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister. The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has also extended the tenure of SBI MD Ashwini Tewari for a period of two years.

Dinesh Khara joined SBI as a probationary officer in 1984 and was appointed the SBI's chairman on October 7, 2020, for three years. As per norms, the SBI chairman can hold the position till the age of 63.

Dinesh Khara has wide experience across all verticals of banking, such as Retail Credit, SME and Corporate Credit, deposit mobilisation, international banking operations and branch management.

State Bank of India 

  • Its origin is traced to the setting up of the Bank of Calcutta in 1806, which was later renamed the Bank of Bengal in 1809. The Bank of Bombay was set up in 1840, and the Bank of Madras was set up in 1843. 
  • In 1921, all these three banks were merged, and an Imperial Bank of India was created.
  • On the recommendation of the All India Rural Credit Survey Committee (Gorwala Committee)1951, the government of India nationalised the Imperial Bank of India with the enactment of the State Bank of India Act 1955 and changed its name to the State Bank of India. 
  • In 2007, the entire share of the RBI was transferred to the government of India, and now the government of India has a 56.7% stake in SBI.
  • SBI is the largest commercial bank in India.
  • It has over 22,405 branches and 76089 Banking Correspondents outlets.
  • It has 235 offices/branches in 29 foreign countries. Amongst all the Indian banks, SBI has the largest number of branches/offices outside India.
