The Prime Minister chaired a meeting on 22 January to launch "Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana" with the aim of installing rooftop solar panels on one crore households.

  • The Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana appears to be a new initiative aimed at achieving the target of 40 GW rooftop solar capacity.

Current capacity of India

  • As per the website of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Solar power installed capacity has reached approximately 73.31 GW as of December 2023, with an additional 11.08 GW of capacity for rooftop solar power. 
  • Rajasthan leads the list in terms of total solar capacity with 18.7 GW, followed by Gujarat with 10.5 GW. In the case of rooftop solar capacity, Gujarat is at the top with 2.8 GW, while Maharashtra is second with 1.7 GW.

  • India is expected to have the highest growth in energy demand of any country or region in the world for the next 30 years, according to the latest World Energy Outlook of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Report. 
  • Solar energy is abundant, renewable, and sustainable, making it an ideal source of energy for all Indians to supplement their daily energy consumption. It could be a new hope for India.
  • Solar energy could reduce carbon emissions and India’s plan to reach net zero emissions by 2070 and Emissions Intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030.

What is the Rooftop Solar Programme?

  • The scheme was launched in 2014 with the aim of increasing India's rooftop solar capacity in the residential sector. 
  • It provides financial assistance to eligible projects under MNRE Guidelines and incentives to DISCOMs (distribution companies). 
  • The goal of the program is to achieve a rooftop solar installed capacity of 40 GM by March 2026, and it is currently in its second phase.
