Indian Navy Day 2023: Date, Theme, Significance and History Defence 4 min read

Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4 December to commemorate the successful attack of the Indian Navy on Karachi port. During the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, the Indian Navy conducted Operation Trident against Pakistan's port city of Karachi. During Operation Trident, anti-ship missiles were used in action for the first time in the region. To commemorate this event, India celebrates Navy Day every year on 4 December.

Theme of Indian Navy Day:

  • The theme of Indian Navy Day 2023 is "Operational Efficiency, Readiness and Mission Achievement in the Maritime Domain".
  • The theme highlights the Navy's unwavering commitment to safeguard national interests and maintain maritime security.

Beginning of celebration of Indian Navy Day:

  • Navy Day was first celebrated by the Royal Indian Navy on 21 October 1944, coinciding with the Royal Navy's 'Trafalgar Day' of the British Navy.
  • Till 1971, Navy Day was celebrated on 15 December and the week in which 15 December fell was celebrated as Navy Week.
  • At the Senior Naval Officers Conference in May 1972, it was decided that Indian Navy Day would be celebrated on 4 December every year to recognize the efforts and achievements of the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pak War of 1971.

Origin of Indian Navy:

  • The origin of the Indian Navy can be traced back to the time of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In modern times, Chhatrapati Shivaji was the first to recognize the strategic importance of naval power.
  • In the 17th century, Chhatrapati Shivaji established a formidable navy that commanded the Konkan coast and laid the foundation of maritime prowess.

Importance of Indian Navy:

  • After independence, the Indian Navy emerged as an important pillar of national security. It played a key role in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and demonstrated its strategic importance in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
  • The Indian Navy registered an incredible victory at Karachi port during the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

Changes in the flag of the Indian Navy:

  • A new flag is introduced for the Indian Navy in September 2023, removing the St. George Cross. The tricolor is now visible on the left side of the flag. On a blue background is the Ashoka symbol in gold color. An inscribed Sanskrit text follows this: 'Sham no Varunah'.
