The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has published the annual report on 'Road Accidents in India-2022' in October 2023.

  • The report is based on information received from police departments of States/UTs on a calendar year basis provided by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under the Asia-Pacific Road Accident Data (APRAD) Base Project. 

Key points of the report:

  • According to the report, a total of 4,61,312 road accidents were recorded by states and union territories (UTs) during the calendar year 2022, in which 1,68,491 people lost their lives and 4,43,366 were injured.
  • There has been an increase of 11.9 percent in accidents, 9.4 percent in deaths and 15.3 percent in injuries compared to last year.
  • The report emphasizes the urgency to adopt a comprehensive approach to address the factors contributing to these accidents, primarily
    • Speeding and careless driving,
    • Drunk driving and
    • Including non-compliance with traffic rules.

According to the report it is important that:

  • We strengthen the enforcement mechanism,
  • Enhance driver education and training programs and
  • Invest in improving the condition of roads and vehicles.

Work being done by the government to curb accidents:

  • The Ministry is committed to implementing strong measures to curb road accidents. Ministry in this passage:
    • Road user behaviour,
    • Road infrastructure,
    • Vehicle standards,
    • Enforce traffic rules and
    • It is also working on various aspects like the role of technology in accident prevention.
  • Since road accidents are multi-causal in nature, there is a need to adopt a multi-pronged approach to reduce the problems through concerted efforts of all agencies of both the Central Government and State Governments.
  • The ministry has formulated a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety focusing on 4E (Education, Engineering, Enforcement and Emergency Care).
  • Additionally, the Ministry is actively involved in initiatives such as implementation of modern transport systems, road safety audits and international collaboration to learn from global best practices.

Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) Initiative:

  • Initiatives like electronic detailed accident reports (e-DAR) for real-time data analysis and automated vehicle inspection centers are also underway to deal with road accidents.
