The Appointment Committee of the Union Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the 11th Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Tuhin Kanta Pandey, currently the Finance and Revenue Secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance, will succeed Madhabi Puri Buch as the Chairman of SEBI. 

Madhab Puri Buch, the first woman appointed as the Chairman of SEBI, whose term ends on 28 February  2025.

Madhabi Puri Buch assumed the office of the SEBI Chairman on 1st March 2022 for a three-year term.

The Cabinet's Appointment Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Union Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Cooperation, Amit Shah was held in New Delhi on 27 February 2025.

Term of Tuhin Kanta Pandey

Tuhin Kanta has been appointed for three years from the date he assumes his office.

Legal provision

According to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Terms and Conditions of Service of Chairman and Members) Rules) 1992 the :

  • Maximum term of the Chairman and the whole-time member of SEBI shall not be more than 5 years;
  • No person shall hold the office after attaining the age of sixty-five years;
  • The government will specify the tenure of  the Chairman or the whole-time member while appointing them;
  • The Chairman and the whole time members are eligible for reappointment.

About Tuhin Kanta Pandey 

The 1987 Odisha cadre IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey is the longest serving DIPAM (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) Secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance. During his tenure, Air India and Neelanchal Ispat Nigam Ltd were privatised.

He was appointed Revenue Secretary and assumed the charge on 9th January 2025. He was designated as the Finance Secretary of India.

Tuhin Kanta Pandey had done his Master's in Economics from Punjab University and MBA from the United Kingdom. 

During his distinguished career, he has held several important posts including in the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

About SEBI 

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was set up by an order of the government of India on 12 April  1988.

It was made a statutory body in 1992, under the provisions of the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992, that came into force on January 30, 1992.

SEBI is the regulator of the Capital market and the Commodities market in india
