President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to the recipient at the 18th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Bhubaneshwar Odisha on 10 January 2025.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention was held in Bhubaneswar on 8-10th January 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Convention on 8th January and the valedictory session was addressed by President Droupadi Murmu.
Since 2003,9th January has been observed as Pravasi Divas in India to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India on this day in 1915 from South Africa.
The Ministry of External Affairs organises the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention and since 2015 it has been organised after every two years.
The government of India instituted the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman to honour Non-Resident Indians(NRI), Persons of India Origin(PIO), and institutions /organisations established by them for their exemplary achievements in India or abroad.
The winner of the award is selected by a Jury-cum-Awards committee. The committee is headed by the Vice-President of India and the Minister for External Affairs is the vice-chairman of the committee.
The award is conferred by the President of India on the last day of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention.
