India has conducted the first successful flight test of nuclear ballistic missile Agni-5 on March 11, 2024. Agni-5 missile developed under Make in India project by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

Half the world within reach of Agni-5 missile:

  • With the successful flight testing of this missile, India now has reached half the countries of the world including China and Pakistan and half the world. This missile can hit targets more than 5 thousand away.
  • PM Modi has congratulated DRDO scientists for the first successful flight test of Agni-5 missile.

Testing with MIRV technology:

  • This was the first flight test of the indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.
  • This test will ascertain the capability of a single missile to deploy multiple warheads at various locations.
  • The project director is female, and women have made a substantial contribution to the project.

About MIRV Technology:

  • MIRV is a technology in which a missile has the capability to carry more than one nuclear warhead at once. With its successful testing various enemy targets can be hit.
  • PM Modi has called the Agni-5 missile 'Mission Divyastra'. This missile can hit multiple targets at once. Normally a missile has only one warhead and it hits only one target.
  • MIRV technology was first developed by America in 1970. By the late 20th century both the United States and the Soviet Union had several intercontinental and submarine launched ballistic missiles equipped with MIRVs.

Features of Agni 5 missile:

  • Agni 5 missile is the longest range missile of the Agni series with a range of over 5000 km.
  • The Agni 5 missile has been developed keeping in mind the long-term security needs of the country. Agni 5 missile can hit till the northernmost part of China. With this, it can bring almost the entire Asia including some areas of Europe under its firepower.
  • Agni 5 missile is India's first surface-to-surface missile. This is India's only intercontinental ballistic missile.
  • Agni 5 missile can carry up to one and a half tons of nuclear weapons.
  • The speed of Agni 5 is about 24 times more than the speed of sound.
  • Canister technology has been used in the launching system of Agni 5. Therefore this missile can be easily transported anywhere.
  • The range of Agni 1 to 4 missiles ranges from 700 km to 3,500 km. These have already been deployed.
  • India is enhancing its ability to intercept hostile ballistic missiles both within and beyond the Earth's atmospheric boundary.

India got a new identity from Mission Divyastra:

  • With the successful test of Mission Divyastra, India has now joined the select group of countries which have MIRV capability.
  • The system is outfitted with indigenous avionics systems and highly accurate sensor packages which ensures that the re-entry vehicles reach the target points within the desired accuracy.
  • This avionics system is a symbol of India's growing technological strength.
