The Indian Navy is all set to commission the MH 60R Seahawk, a maritime variant of the Blackhawk helicopter, on 6th March 2024 at INS Garuda, Kochi.
signed with the US government in February 2020.
With the induction of the Seahawks, the Indian Navy is expected to witness a substantial surge in its maritime power.
Role of Seahawk
- The helicopter is designed to perform various roles, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and vertical replenishment (VERTREP).
- The helicopter underwent extensive testing in Indian Reference Atmosphere (IRA) conditions and is fully integrated into the Fleet.
- It offers advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics suite that make it ideal for the Indian Navy's maritime security needs, providing enhanced capabilities for both conventional and asymmetric threats.
Specification of MH 60R Seahawk
- The system includes advanced digital sensors that help to track and engage ships or submarines. These sensors include multi-mode radar, electro-optical/infrared camera, electronic support measures system, datalinks, dipping sonar, aircraft survivability systems, and sonobuoys.
- The crew processes the information gathered by the sensors and creates a complete picture of the ocean surface and subsea domain. With this knowledge, they can efficiently and effectively track, target, and engage ships or submarines.
- The weapons available include torpedoes, air-to-ground missiles and rockets, and crew-served guns.
Importance of MH 60R Seahawk
- The induction of the MH 60R helicopter will significantly enhance India's blue-water capabilities, extending the operational reach of the Navy and supporting sustained naval operations across vast maritime domains.
- Deployment of the Seahawk in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) will strengthen the Indian Navy's maritime presence, reducing any potential threats, and ensuring a secure and safe environment in this strategically crucial region.
- The Indian Navy's commissioning of Seahawks shows their commitment to strengthening maritime security. This aligns with the Government of India's goal of ensuring Security And Growth for All in the Region.
