IAS Vipin Kumar appointed Chairman of the Airport Authority of India

IAS Vipin Kumar appointed Chairman of the Airport Authority of India Appointment 3 min read

1996 Bihar cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Vipin Kumar took over as the Chairman of the Airport Authority of India on 28 October 2024. He succeeded M Suresh, who was appointed interim Chairman by the government of India after the former Chairman, IAS officer Sanjeev Kumar, was promoted.

About Chairman Vipin Kumar 

Vipin Kumar has held several important posts in the Bihar administration. He served as District Magistrate in several districts of the state. Among his notable appointments were being the Chairman of the Bihar Bridge Construction Corporation and Managing Director of the Bihar Milk Cooperative Federations. He was also appointed Director of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in Bihar.

Before taking over the post of the Chairman of the Airport Authority of India, Vipin Kumar was 

Additional Secretary in the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, government of India. He was responsible for implementing key government of India schemes like the Samagra Shiksha Scheme, National Education Policy-2020, and the PM-SHRI Schemes.

Airport Authority of India 

The Airport Authority of India is a statutory body created under the provisions of the Airport Authority of India Act 1994. It came into existence on 1 April 1995 after the merger of the National Airports Authority and the International Airports Authority of India. 

In February 2009, the government of India granted the Airport Authority of India a Mini Ratna -Category 1 Central Public Sector Enterprise status.

The Airport Authority of India comes under the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The Airport Authority of India is a nodal body for creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure in the country's ground and airspace.

The Airport Authority of India currently manages 133 airports. Of these,110 are operational, while 23 are non-operational.

Out of the 110 operational airports, 35 airports are International airports.
