Establishment of Center of Excellence (Pilot) for promoting Geospatial Technology Agreements and MoU 3 min read

A Center of Excellence will soon be set up to promote geospatial innovation and research in the country and to meet the emerging technology solution requirements of the geospatial domain in the country.

  • An MoU was signed between the National Geospatial Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the National Institute of Geoinformatics and Technology of the Survey of India and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Tirupati for setting up this Center of Excellence.
  • The Center will support and encourage innovative geospatial technology-based start-ups, industries, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) that have applications and impact in key sectors of the economy.
  • Incubators will also be set up to support startups focusing on developing applications of geospatial technology.

  • The Survey of India is the central mapping and surveying agency of India.
  • It was formed in the year 1767 to organize the territories of the British India Company.

National Geospatial Policy 2022

  • The National Geospatial Policy 2022 was notified by the Ministry of Science and Technology on December 28, 2022, while the policy received Cabinet approval on December 16, 2022.

  • It is a 13-year-old guideline that aims to promote the country's geospatial data industry and develop a national framework to improve citizen services and usage.
  • The policy aims to develop a high-resolution topographic survey and mapping and high-accuracy digital elevation models for the entire country by the year 2030.
  • This policy mentions the formation of an apex body called Geospatial Data Promotion and Development Committee at the national level.
