The Defense Ministry signed an agreement with Kochi-based M/s Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) at a total cost of Rs 313.42 crore in New Delhi on October 16, 2023. Under this agreement, mid-life upgrade and revitalization of "INS Beas" will be done.
INS Beas is the second steam-powered warship:
- INS Beas will be the first Brahmaputra class warship to be re-powered by diesel instead of steam.
INS Beas to be upgraded and join Navy:
- Following completion of the mid-life upgrade and revitalisation, INS Beas will join the Indian Navy's active fleet in 2026 with a modern weapon stock and advanced combat capability.
Benefits from this project:
- This first transformative warship refit project will mark a significant advancement in the maintenance philosophy of the Indian Navy and the repair capability of M/s CSL.
- This project will involve more than 50 MSMEs and will provide employment to more than 3500 people.
- This project will be the proud flag bearer of self-reliant India in line with the Make-in-India initiative of the Government of India.
Mid Life Upgrade:
- Mid-life upgrade, especially in the defense context, is an upgrade process designed to increase the utility and capability of a defense material.
