In Rajasthan Budget 2023-24 Alwar was awarded the status of Municipal Corporation from Municipal Council which on 2 August has been officially declared. With this declaration Rajasthan now has 11 Municipal Corporation.
Municipal Corporation is a local self-government which has come into being under the Rajasthan Municipality Act 1959.
Part IXA relating to Municipalities which contains articles 243P to 243ZG was inserted in the
Constitution by the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992.
Municipal Corporation shall be constituted for a “larger urban area‟, a Municipal Council for a “smaller urban area‟ and a Nagar Panchayat for “an area in transition from a rural area to an urban area‟.
Criteria for creation of Urban Body
For the formation of a municipal corporation in the state, the city should either have a minimum 5 lakh population or it should be a divisional headquarters.
Similarly, population density should be 1,000 people per square kilometer. Moreover, the source of revenue per person should be a minimum Rs 500. The livelihood of minimum 50% of the population should be different from agriculture.
The municipal council can be formed in cities where the population is more than 1 lakh but less than 5 lakh and it should be a district headquarters.
The population density should be minimum 500 people per square kilometer and per person source of revenue should be minimum Rs 200. The livelihood of minimum 25% of the population should be different from agriculture.
For a municipality, which is the smallest form, it will be necessary to have a minimum population of 10,000 but less than one lakh.
