155 zoos recognized in India: Zoo Authority

155 zoos recognized in India: Zoo Authority Environment 1 min read

The Zoo Authority has recognized 155 zoos in India under Section 38-H of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and has granted prior permission to set up zoos under this Act during the last five years.

  • The details of zoos for which permission was granted in each State/UT is given at Annexure II.

  • In order to improve zoo management, conservation, education and animal welfare, the Central Zoo Authority conducts systematic evaluation for zoos known as Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE).

  • MEE-ZOO is organized every four years.

  • The first phase of MEE-Zoos took place in 2021 and evaluated 39 zoos, including 16 large-category zoos and 23 medium-category zoos.
