The Zoo Authority has recognized 155 zoos in India under Section 38-H of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and has granted prior permission to set up zoos under this Act during the last five years.
The details of zoos for which permission was granted in each State/UT is given at Annexure II.
In order to improve zoo management, conservation, education and animal welfare, the Central Zoo Authority conducts systematic evaluation for zoos known as Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE).
MEE-ZOO is organized every four years.
The first phase of MEE-Zoos took place in 2021 and evaluated 39 zoos, including 16 large-category zoos and 23 medium-category zoos.
