PM Narendra Modi Launches World's Largest Grain Storage Scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the pilot project of the world's largest cooperative grain storage scheme on 24 February 2024. This scheme has been launched under the ‘Sahakar Se Samridhi Programme’. The event was organized at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi.

Objective of Grain Storage Scheme:

The objective of this project is to operationalize PACS by linking them with NABARD.
In this way, crores of small and marginal farmers will benefit.
NABARD has developed national level common software for this project. It has been designed to meet the multiple needs of PACS across the country.
The world's largest storage scheme of 700 lakh metric tonnes will be completed in the next five years at a cost of Rs 1.25 lakh crore.
This will help farmers to store their produce and sell it at the right time as per their need, and will also help them in taking loans from banks.

Operation of 11 PACS from 11 states:

The Prime Minister inaugurated the pilot project of the ‘World's Largest Grain Storage Scheme in the Cooperative Sector’ in 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) of 11 states.
Under the ‘Sahakar Se Samriddhi Programme’, grain storages have been built across the country. It is being operated in 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) in 11 states.
As part of this initiative, the Prime Minister also initiated the construction of an additional 500 PACS (Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies) nationwide, aimed at building warehouses and other agricultural infrastructure facilities.

Budget of Rs 2,500 crore approved for PACS:

PACS aims to seamlessly integrate warehouses with the food grain supply chain and strengthen food security.
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the project for computerization of 18 thousand PACS across the country.
The Central Government has approved a budget of Rs 2,500 crore for this important project.

Benefits of computerization of PACS:

On this occasion, Union Cooperative Minister Amit Shah said that from February 24, complete computerization of more than 18,000 PACS is taking place. With the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, every transaction will start using computers.
Computerization is being done in 18,000 PACS out of 65,000 in a very short time. It will be implemented in 30,000 more packs and dedicated to the people before the elections
Computerization of PACS will not only bring transparency and modernize them but also will create many business opportunities.
The Ministry of Cooperation has made new bye-laws for PACS. State governments across the country, rising above their respective parties, have accepted and implemented these bye-laws despite it being a subject in the state list. As soon as the bye-laws are implemented, Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) will be able to do 20 types of new work.

PACS will be able to work in new areas:

From now on, PACS will be able to work in many new areas which mainly include the following:
- Will be able to do dairy work also
- Will also be able to join the Blue Revolution
- Will also do water management work under Jal Jeevan Mission
- Will also contribute to increasing storage capacity
- Will also work as Common Service Center (CSC)
- Will be able to open shops of cheap medicines and grains and will also be able to run petrol pumps.
Through the new bye-laws, the process of linking PACS with many works started. Now due to their computerization, the accounts of all the works have been integrated into a single software. This software can talk to the farmer in every language of the country.
