Prime Minister Narendra Modi released six special commemorative postage stamps dedicated to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in New Delhi on January 18, 2024. Along with this, an album of postage stamps related to Shri Ram which were issued earlier in many countries of the world was also released.

  • The 48-page album contains stamps related to Ram from 20 countries including America and New Zealand. Postal stamps have been made by incorporating five components in its pictures.

Postage Stamps Related to Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple:

  • Prime Minister Modi released a total of 6 commemorative postage stamps which include Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Ram Temple, Jatayu, Kevatraj and Maa Shabari.
  • These commemorative stamps will also help the young generation of the country to know about Lord Ram and his life.
  • Devotion to Lord Rama has been expressed through artistic expression on these stamps.
  • On these, a wish has been made for the development of the nation with the mention of the popular quatrain: 'मंगल भवन अमंगल हारी'.
  • These stamps have the image of Surya, the symbol of Suryavanshi Ram, which also gives the message of new light in the country.
  • There is also a picture of the river Saryu, which indicates that the country is always in motion.
  • These postage stamps intricately depict the exquisite interior architecture of the temple with great attention to detail.

Importance of Postage Stamps:

  • Envelopes affix these stamps for sending letters or important documents. But these stamps also serve another purpose.
  • These postage stamps also serve as a medium to transmit historical events to future generations.
  • These stamps are the smallest form of history books, artifacts and historical sites.

India's first postage stamp:

  • ‘Scinde Dawk Stamp’ was the first postage paper stamp issued from Karachi on 1 July 1852. Due to the lacquer stamp on it, it could not last more than a few days before it melted and came off.

World's first postage stamp:

  • Penny Black was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, released in Great Britain on May 1, 1840. The issue of postage stamps in the name of the Queen was later banned.

First stamp of independent India:

  • When the country became independent in 1947, the first stamp was issued on 21 November of the same year. It had "Jai Hind" and "India" inscriptions on it. Its price was three and a half annas.

  • In 1774, Warren Hastings founded the inaugural post office in Kolkata.
  • In 1852, postage stamps were started for the first time in India.
  • India issued its first postage stamp featuring the portrait of Queen Victoria on October 1, 1854.
  • The Postal Department was established in India on October 1, 1854.
  • The largest postage stamp in India, dedicated to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was issued on August 20, 1991.
  • The postal department was established in Britain in 1516, which is known as Royal Mail.
  • In 1576, the postal department was established in France, known as La Poste.
  • In 1775, the US Postal Department, known as US Mail, was established.
  • In 1882, the postal department was established in Sri Lanka, known as Sri Lanka Post.
  • In 1947, the Postal Department was established in Pakistan, which is known as Pakistan Post.
