The government of India’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme completed its 10th anniversary on 22 January 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme on 22 January 2025 in Panipat, Haryana. The main aim of the scheme was to improve the Sex Ratio at Birth in the country, stop female foeticide, and ensure the survival, protection, and education of the girl child. 

Sex Ratio at Birth refers to the number of girls born for every 1000 male children born.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, the government of India will organise a series of events across the country focusing on educating, protecting, and empowering the girl child in India. The program will continue from 22 January to 8th of March 2025, which is the International Women’s Day.

Implementing Ministry for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development is the nodal ministry that implements the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme in collaboration with other ministries of the government of India.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao now part of the Mission Shakti Scheme

The government of India has expanded the objectives of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme and made it a part of the Mission Shakti of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development for the 15th Finance Commission period from 2021-2022 to 2025-2026.

  • The Mission Shakti is a comprehensive program of the government for women’s safety and empowerment.
  • The Mission Shakti has two subcomponents- Sambal which focuses on the  Safety and Security of women and Samarthya which focuses on women's empowerment.
  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is part of the Sambal sub-component of Mission Shakti.
  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme now adopts a multi-sectoral approach that involves education, child development, health, and community awareness. 
  • The  Union Ministry of Women and Child Development remains the nodal ministry for the implementation of the scheme. However it is being implemented in collaboration with the other four ministries of the Union government- Education, Minority Affairs, Health and Family Welfare, and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

Target of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme

The government of India has set the following target for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.

  • Improving the Sex Ratio at Birth by two points every year.
  • Improving or sustaining institutional deliveries to 95% or above.
  • Target of 1% increase in 1st Trimester Antenatal Care (ANC) Registration per year to .
  • Target of 1% increase in enrolment at the secondary education level and skilling of girls/women per year.
  • Reduce girl's dropout rate at secondary and higher secondary levels.
  • Raising awareness about safe Menstrual Hygiene Management.

Financial Structure of the Scheme

The  Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme is a centrally sponsored scheme where the central government bears all the expenses of the scheme.

Allocation for Districts 

  • For a district that has a Sex Ratio at Birth of 918 or less- Rs 40 Lakh per year.
  • For districts which have a Sex Ratio at Birth between 919-952- Rs 30 Lakh per year.
  • For a district that has a Sex Ratio at Birth of more than 952 - Rs 20 Lakhs per year.

Achievements of the Scheme

  • Improvement in national Sex Ratio at Birth from 918 in 2014-15, to 930 in 2023-24.
  • The Gross Enrollment Ratio of girl children increased from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 78% in 2023-24.
  • Institutional deliveries increased from 61% in 2014-15 to over 97.3% by 2023-24.
