World No.1 Jannik Sinner leads Italy to 2024 Davis Cup Title Sport 6 min read

The Italian men’s tennis team, led by world No.1 Jannik Sinner, successfully defended their 2024 Davis Cup title by defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in the finals. The Italian team won their third Davis Cup after victory in 1976 and 2023. 

For the first time in its Davis Cup history, the Netherlands team was appearing in the final for the first time.

In the current format of the Davis Cup, eight teams qualify for the Finals, which is played in a knockout format. Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Spain, Canada, Germany, Argentina, and the United States participated in the Finals this year.

Tennis icon Rafael Nadal retired from professional tennis after his team, Spain, was knocked out in the Quarterfinals.

Jannik Sinner Leads Italian Victory Charge 

In the final world No.1, Jannik Sinner defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (2), 6-2 to take an unassailable lead in the best-of-three match against the Netherlands.

Earlier, in the first match of the final, Italian Matteo Berrettini demolished Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2 to set the tone of the final. With the Italian team 2-0 up, there was no need for the doubles match.

The Davis Cup win concluded a terrific 2024 year for Jannik Sinner. In 2024, Jannik Sinner remained unbeaten in the 70 matches of the ATP tour and has won eight singles titles, including the Australian Open, the US Open, and the ATP Finals. He finished the 2024 season as the world's No. 1 ranked ATP player.

Golden year for Italian Tennis 

2024 has been the golden year of Italian tennis. 

Italy is the first country after Czechia (Czech Republic), since 2013, to successfully defend its Davis Cup title.

It is the fourth country in the world to win the Davis Cup and Billie Jean Cup (women's tennis team tournament) in the same year.

The first country to win both titles in the same year was the United States in 1990, followed by the Czech Republic (2012), Russia (2021), and Italy in 2024.

In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Italian player Lorenzo Musetti won the bronze medal, while Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani won the country's first gold medal in the women’s doubles.

About Davis Cup 

The Davis Cup is an annual men’s team tennis tournament and is the flagship tournament of the International Tennis Federation.

It started in 1900 as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge and was only played between Great Britain and the United States.

In 1905, the format was expanded to include three more teams.

The United States is the most successful team, with 32  wins, followed by Australia, which has 28 titles.

India has never won the Davis Cup and was the runner-up in the 1966, 1974 and 1987 editions.

About Billie Jean King Cup

The Billie Jean King Cup is the equivalent of the Davis Cup for women’s team tennis.

The International Tennis Federation organises it every year since 1963. 

It was started as the Federation Cup in 1963, and in 1995, its name was changed to Fed Cup. Its name was again changed to Billie Jean King in 2020.

The 61st edition of the Billie Jean King Cup was held in Malaga, Spain, from 14 to 20 November 2024. The Italian women's team won it by defeating Slovakia in the final.

It was the first Billie Jean King title for the Italian team.

The United States of America is the most successful team in the history of the Billie Jean King Cup, having won it 18 times.
