Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) took over as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on 1 October 2023.

Tarun Sobti succeeds Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahendru, who retires on 30 September 2023 after more than 38 years of service.

  • Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti joined the Indian Navy on 01 July 1988. He is a Navigation and Direction specialist.

Achievements of Tarun Sobti:

  • In his service span of over 35 years, he has held a variety of command and staff appointments both at sea and ashore. 
  • As Flag Officer, Tarun Sobti has commanded the missile boat INS Nishank, missile corvette INS Kora and guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata.
  • During his staff tenure, he has served in the Directorate of Personnel Requirements and Directorate of Personnel and as Naval Attache (a person who works in an embassy) in the Embassy of India, Moscow.
  • The flag officer was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2020 and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 by the President of India.

During the tenure of Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahendru as the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Indian Navy achieved several significant achievements that have enhanced India's maritime reach and operational agility as well as several successful operations with friendly nations. Strategic cooperation initiatives have also been taken.
