Senior diplomat Randhir Jaiswal has been made the new spokesperson of the Indian External Affairs Ministry. Randhir Jaiswal has replaced Arindam Bagchi. Arindam Bagchi has been appointed India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations in Geneva.

About Randhir Jaiswal:

  • Randhir Jaiswal also took charge as the new spokesperson on January 3, 2024. Jaiswal, a 1998 Indian Foreign Service officer, last served as India's Consul General in New York.
  • Randhir Jaiswal has been part of India's Permanent Mission to various countries for over 20 years. Jaiswal has also served in India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Cuba, South Africa, Portugal and New York.
  • Randhir Jaiswal, the new spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, has also served as Joint Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs headquarters in New Delhi.
  • Jaiswal has also played an important role in India's relations with Western European countries.
  • Jaiswal has served as consul at the Mission of India in New York since July 2020.

Bagchi becomes India's permanent representative to the UN:

  • Bagchi, a 1995-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, took over as the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson in March 2021.
  • Bagchi's spokesperson’s time has been in the headlines for many reasons.
  • During Bagchi's time, he was present on many important occasions including:  
    • The eastern Ladakh border dispute
    • India's COVID-19 response
    • New Delhi's G-20 chairmanship

Bagchi to replace Indra Mani Pandey at UN:

  • In Geneva, Bagchi, an additional secretary, will replace Indra Mani Pandey, who is now returning to New Delhi.
  • In October 2023, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi was appointed India's next Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva.
  • A 1995 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Arindam Bagchi, has also been an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.
