Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth more than Rs 1150 crore in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, on January 3, 2024. January 3's development projects cover technology, energy, water resources, health care and education.

  • The Prime Minister gave laptops to students under the Laptop Scheme. Gave bicycles to school girls under ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. The Prime Minister also handed PM Kisan's credit cards to the beneficiaries of the farmers and fishermen.
  • Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project was dedicated to the people on January 3.

Visa for women to go on Hajj without 'Mehram':

  • The PM mentioned the steps taken for Haj pilgrims, which have also benefited the people of Lakshadweep. Mentioned the ease of the Haj visa, the digitalization of visas, and the permission process for women to go on Haj without 'Mehram'.

Global Seafood Market Mention:

  • The PM highlighted India's efforts to increase its share in the global seafood market. Lakshadweep benefited from this as local tuna fish is being exported to Japan. The PM also informed about exploring the possibilities of seaweed farming.
  • Mentioned the efforts of the government to put the Union Territory on the international tourism map. Under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, a destination-specific master plan is being drafted for Lakshadweep. Lakshadweep is home to two Blue-Flag beaches and developed water-villa projects on the Kadmat and Suheli islands.
  • Lakshadweep is becoming a major destination for cruise tourism. Tourist inflow has increased five times compared to five years ago. PM called on the citizens of India to visit at least fifteen places in the country before deciding to travel abroad.

KLI- SOFC Start:

  • PM launched the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project. The Prime Minister announced this during his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort in 2020.
  • This will increase the internet speed by more than 100 times (from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps). Lakshadweep will have its first-ever submarine optic fibre cable connection, marking a historic development post-independence.

Benefits of KLI– SOFC:

  • The dedicated submarine OFC will enable faster and more reliable internet services in a paradigm shift in the communication infrastructure on the Lakshadweep islands. Apart from this, it has many other benefits:
    • Telemedicine
    • E-governance
    • Educational initiatives
    • Digital banking
    • Digital currency usage
    • Digital literacy etc., will be enabled.

LTTD plant dedicated to the nation:

  • During the inauguration, the Prime Minister unveiled the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant in Kadmat. 
  • The PM also dedicated the nation's Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to all Agatti and Minicoy Islands households.

Kavaratti Solar Power Plant dedicated to the nation:

  • This plant is the first battery-supported solar power project in Lakshadweep. This will reduce dependence on the diesel-based power generation plant at the India Reserve Battalion (IRBN) Complex at Kavaratti.

The foundation stone for the construction of Model Anganwadi Centers:

  • The PM laid the foundation for constructing five model Anganwadi Centers (Nand Ghars) in the five islands of Lakshadweep. These islands are Andrott, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti and Minicoy.
  • The PM also laid the foundation stone for renovating the primary healthcare facility at Kalpeni.
