Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R.K. Singh dedicated to the nation the 660 MW unit of Barh Super Thermal Power Project at Barh in Bihar on August 18, 2023.
The 660 MW unit, inaugurated on August 18, 2023, is Unit #2 of Phase I of the project. The commissioning of this unit will further strengthen the Government's efforts to provide reliable and affordable power to the nation.
Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister congratulated the NTPC team including all the engineers and workers involved in the project for the successful completion of the unit. The Union Minister expressed confidence that the remaining third unit of the project would also be successfully completed.
It is noteworthy that more than 90 percent of Bihar's power requirement is met by NTPC.
Shri Singh said that due to the efforts of the government, the country has become a power surplus country in the last nine years from power deficit.
The entire country is connected to a unified grid operating on a single frequency. He said that distribution systems have been strengthened on an unprecedented scale and schemes for strengthening distribution systems in all states have been implemented at an approved cost of over Rs 2 lakh crore.
Shri Singh informed that today the average availability of electricity in rural areas is 20.5 hours and in urban areas it is 23.5 hours.
The Ministry of Power has notified the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 under the Electricity Act, 2003. Implementation of these rules will ensure that new electricity connections, refunds and other services are provided in a time-bound manner.
