Gaganyaan Mission Completes Human-Rating Milestones

Union Minister of State for Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, informed the Lok Sabha on 5 August 2026 that India's Gaganyaan mission has achieved key technical milestones in developing and validating its human-rating systems, moving the programme closer to its first uncrewed and crewed flights.

Gaganyaan Mission Accomplished: Human-Rating Milestones 

The development activities of the Gaganyaan mission validating human rating aspects include the following:

Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3) & Orbital Module

Development and ground testing of all propulsion stages and structural components for HLVM3 have been completed. For the Orbital Module, the engineering model of the Environmental Control & Life Support System (ECLSS) has been realised, while the Thermal Protection System, Deceleration System, Crew Module Up-righting System, and end-to-end avionics have all been successfully qualified.

Crew Escape System (CES) & Flight Tests

1. All five types of motors for the Crew Escape System have been developed and static tested, with the associated structures realised and qualified. 
2. On flight validation, the TV-D1 mission successfully demonstrated the Crew Escape System in-flight, while the IADT-01 and IADT-02 tests validated the parachute-based deceleration system using a simulated Crew Module. 
3. Preparations for the next test, TV-D2, are currently underway.

Ground Infrastructure & Recovery Network

Major facilities have been established, including the Orbital Module Preparation Facility, Gaganyaan Control Centre/Facility, Crew Training Facility, and modifications to the Second Launch Pad at SDSC SHAR. The ground communication network has been finalised, including IDRSS-1 feeder stations, and joint recovery plans have been worked out with the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.

ISRO International Collaborations

ISRO is working with multiple global space agencies to support the Gaganyaan programme. The European Space Agency (ESA) is providing ground network operations support, while the Australian Space Agency (ASA) is cooperating on crew and Crew Module recovery in international waters. France's CNES is offering specialised training for ISRO's Flight Surgeons and Ground Support Teams. Russia's Roscosmos is supplying custom hardware such as crew seats, viewports and flight suits, along with wind tunnel testing and generic spaceflight training for India's first batch of Gaganyatris at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre.

Long-Term Vision: Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS)

India's long-term human spaceflight roadmap includes the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, a five-module space station targeted for full operation by 2035. The Cabinet has already approved development and launch of the foundational first module, BAS-01, with system engineering and subsystem design currently progressing across ISRO centres.
