National Voters' Day (NVD) is observed annually on January 25th in India. This year, in 2024, India is celebrating its 14th National Voters' Day (NVD). For this, a national function is being organised in New Delhi. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is organising the event.
Chief Guest of the NVD Ceremony:
- President Draopadi Murmu is the chief guest at this function organised by the Election Commission. While Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal is the guest of honour.
- Heads and representatives of election management bodies from different countries are also participating in this program. These countries mainly include:
- Maldives
- Philippines
- Russia
- Sri Lanka
- Uzbekistan.
Theme of the 14th National Voters' Day:
- Dedicated to the voters of the country, the theme of NVD 2024 is like last year: ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote For Sure’.
Election Best Practice Awards:
- During the 14th NVD event, the Hon'ble President will present the Election Best Practice Awards for the year 2023.
- These awards will be presented to state and district-level officials for their contribution and excellence in various areas in the conduct of elections during 2023. These areas are mainly:
- IT Initiative
- Security Management
- Election Management
- Easy Elections
- Voter's List
- Voter Awareness and Outreach
- Besides, awards will also be given to important stakeholders, including government departments and media organisations for their valuable contribution to voter awareness.
A Short Film Performance of ‘My Vote My Duty’:
- A short voter awareness film 'My Vote My Duty' produced by ECI in collaboration with producer Raj Kumar Hirani, was also screened at the event.
- The first copy of the ECI publication 'ECI Initiative for General Elections 2024' was presented to the President by Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar.
75th year of ECI:
- The Election Commission of India (ECI) is celebrating its 75th year of service to the nation on January 25, 2024.
- To mark the occasion and in light of the 2024 parliamentary elections, a commemorative postage stamp with the theme “Inclusive Elections” was released.
Major events to be held in the 75th year of ECI:
- On this occasion, an innovative multi-media campaign for voter education and awareness for the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024 will also be launched.
- A multimedia exhibition featuring the magnificence of Indian elections, electoral reforms, technological advancements and election management innovations will be showcased.
- NVD is celebrated at the national, state, district, constituency and polling station levels, making it one of the biggest celebrations in the country.
History of National Voters' Day (NVD):
- The Election Commission of India (ECI) was established on 25th January, 1950. National Voters' Day is celebrated every year on 25 January across the country since 2011 to commemorate the Foundation Day.
- The main objective of NVD Utsav is to create election awareness among the citizens. To motivate citizens to actively engage in the electoral process.
Significance of National Voters Day (NVD):
- Dedicated to the voters of the country, National Voters' Day is also used to enroll voters, especially newly eligible young voters.
- New voters are honoured at NVD functions held across the country. Their Voter Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is handed over.
