India’s Man Singh wins the gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championships 2024 in Hong Kong.

Man Singh’s Achievements

  • At the Asian Marathon Championships 2024, he bagged the medal with a personal best timing of two hours 14 minutes and 19 seconds (2:14:19) and became the second Indian to win the Gold medal.
  • The first Indian man to win the Asian Marathon Championships title in 2017 was Gopi Thonakal. He had clocked 2:15:48 to win the gold in Dongguan, China.
  • The 34-year-old Indian marathon runner Man Singh comfortably beat runner-up Huang Yongzheng of China with a time difference of 65 seconds in the men’s event. Kyrgyzstan’s Tiapkin Ilya came third in 2:18:18. 
  • Man Singh’s previous personal best was at Mumbai Marathon 2023. Man Singh was part of the Indian contingent at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 and finished eighth with a timing of 2:16:59 in the marathon event. 
  • Man Singh's time was below the Paris Olympics qualifying mark of 2:08:10 in the Asian Marathon Championships 2024.

In the women’s event, India’s Ashvini Jadhav finished eighth in 2:56:42 and Jyoti Gawate finished 11th in 3:06:20. 

  • The entry standard for the women’s marathon for the Paris 2024 Olympics is 2:26:50.

About Asian Marathon Championships

  • The Asian Marathon Championships is an international competition held biennially for Asian marathon road runners. 
  • The organizer of the event is the Asian Athletics Association. It was created in 1988 after it was decided to remove the 42.195-kilometer (26-mile and 385-yard) race from the program of events at the Asian Athletics Championships. 
  • Prior to the creation of the Asian Marathon Championships, championship marathons were held for men in 1973 and 1975. Finally, both men and women competed in the championship marathon in 1985.
