Thrissur Pooram is a grand temple festival that is celebrated all over the world. Kerala is a state known for its rich culture and traditions. 

  • The state is home to many religions and is characterized by its diverse landscape, terrain, rituals, culture, and history. 
  • Thrissur Pooram is a festival that is deeply rooted in Kerala's rich cultural heritage. Although it is a temple festival, people from all walks of life come together to celebrate it with music, processions, fairs, and fireworks. 

Thrissur Pooram 

  • Thrissur Pooram is a seven-day festival, and the most important day is the sixth day, which is when the festival takes place. It is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam and coincides with the rising of the moon with the Pooram star. This year, Thrissur Pooram falls on April 20.
  • The ruler of Cochin from 1790 to 1805, Shakthan Thampuran, started Thrissur Pooram in 1796. In the past, temples would attend the Arattupuzha Pooram, but due to heavy rainfall that year, they were unable to attend. To ensure that the tradition of temple festivals continued, Shakthan Thampuran decided to start his own temple festival in Thrissur, which is how Thrissur Pooram came to be celebrated.
  • The temples that participate in Thrissur Pooram are Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple, Laloor Bhagavathy Temple, Sree Karthyayani Temple, Kanimangalam Temple, Nethila Kavu Bhagavathy Temple, Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple, Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple, Panamukkumpally Sastha Temple, Pookattikkara - Karamukku Bhagavathy Temple, Chembukkavu Bhagavathy Temple, and Parakkottukavu Bhagavathy Temple.
  • During the festival, 50 decorated elephants, accompanied by traditional music, march through Thekkinkadu Maidanam of Thrissur to the famous Vadakkunnathan Temple, where Lord Vadakkunnathan is worshiped.
  • Devotees from all over India, as well as from abroad, participate in the processions and visit Thrissur Pooram to offer their prayers to Lord Vadakkunnathan on this auspicious day. The fireworks display at Vedikkettu is one of the main attractions of this festival.
