Thrissur Pooram

  • Thrissur Pooram is a seven-day festival, and the most important day is the sixth day, which is when the festival takes place. It is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam and coincides with the rising of the moon with the Pooram star. This year, Thrissur Pooram falls on April 20.
  • The ruler of Cochin from 1790 to 1805, Shakthan Thampuran, started Thrissur Pooram in 1796. In the past, temples would attend the Arattupuzha Pooram, but due to heavy rainfall that year, they were unable to attend. To ensure that the tradition of temple festivals continued, Shakthan Thampuran decided to start his own temple festival in Thrissur, which is how Thrissur Pooram came to be celebrated.

  • During the festival, 50 decorated elephants, accompanied by traditional music, march through Thekkinkadu Maidanam of Thrissur to the famous Vadakkunnathan Temple, where Lord Vadakkunnathan is worshiped.
  • Devotees from all over India, as well as from abroad, participate in the processions and visit Thrissur Pooram to offer their prayers to Lord Vadakkunnathan on this auspicious day. The fireworks display at Vedikkettu is one of the main attractions of this festival.
