Cambodia's electoral body has released the final results of the July 23 election, reaffirming the re-election of Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party.
With a resounding victory, Prime Minister Hun Sen secures another five-year term.
The Cambodian People's Party (CPP), led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, secured a landslide victory by winning 120 out of the 125 available seats, as declared by the National Election Committee. In contrast, the royalist Funsinpek Party only managed to secure five seats, while none of the other 16 political parties won any seats.
The Cambodian People's Party received a significant mandate with 6,398,311 votes out of the 8.2 million ballots cast in the popular vote, while Funsinpec received 716,490 popular votes.
On July 27, 2023, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that he would step down at the end of the month, passing the premiership to his eldest son, Hun Manet, who currently serves as the country's army chief. This leadership transition marks a generational change, and several young MPs are expected to assume ministerial positions, including Hun Sen's youngest son and other relatives of senior party members.
Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is turning 71 on August 5, 2023, has held power for an impressive 38 years, making him the longest-serving prime minister in Asia.
Additionally, on May 30, 2023, Cambodia's King, His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromnith Norodom Sihamoni, undertook an official visit to India.
His son, 45-year-old Hun Manet, holds impressive qualifications, including a bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a master's degree from New York University, and a doctorate in economics from the University of Bristol in the UK.
