PM Modi Invites Australian Prime Minister Albanese to 7th Quad Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on 6 May 2025 and invited him to the 7th Quad summit meeting, which India will host later this year. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Albanese on securing a decisive mandate in the recently held Parliamentary election, where his Labor party swept back to power with a landslide victory.
A general election was held in Australia to elect a new House of Representatives.
The Australian Parliament has two houses -the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The 76-member Senate is the upper house representing Australia's six states and two territories.
The 171-member House of Representatives is the lower house and is popularly elected by the electors of Australia.
An election was held on 3rd May 2025 to elect a new House of Representatives for a three-year term.
The ruling Labor party, led by Anthony Albanese, has secured a majority in the 171-member House.
Anthony Albanese is the first Prime Minister in 20 years to win two consecutive elections.
India, Australia, Japan, and the United States of America are members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad.
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the proponent of the Quad. After the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean, he proposed a forum for coordinating the major maritime powers in the Indo-Pacific region to deal with such natural disasters in the future.
Quad formally came into existence in 2007.
Now, Quad is seen more as a front against China, which is very aggressive and assertive in the Indo-Pacific region.
So, six summit meetings of the leaders of the Quad have taken place.
The 6th summit meeting was hosted by former American President Joe Biden on 21 September 2024 in Delaware, United States of America.
India will host the 7th summit meeting of the leaders, though the meeting schedule has not yet been decided.
Australia is the world’s smallest continent and the sixth-largest country in area.
It lies in the southern hemisphere between the Indian and Pacific oceans.

Territories - Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, which includes the country’s capital, Canberra.
