Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi Sworn in as Egyptian President for his third term

Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in as the president of Egypt for a third term on 2 April 2024. He will remain the president until 2030. The Egyptian President has a six-year term. President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi took the oath of office at the headquarters of the Egyptian Parliament in the New Administrative Capital, which lies 45 Kilometers east of the present capital, Cairo.
President Sisi won the presidential election held in December 2023 with 88.6% of the votes. There was hardly any serious opponent to Sisi in the Presidential election.
Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi was a military officer in the Egyptian Army who became the de facto leader in July 2013 after the military deposed the popularly elected president, Mohamed Morsi, following a popular uprising.
In the 2014 presidential election, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi was elected president of Egypt for the first time. He was reelected in 2018.
In 2019, the Egyptian constitution was amended, extending the term of the president from four to six years. It also raised the limit for a person to be the president of Egypt from two to three.
A person who has been born in Egypt, born to Egyptian parents, and is at least 40 years of age can become the president of Egypt.
The president is the head of state. He appoints the prime minister (who is the head of government), ministers, and deputy ministers.
The oath-taking ceremony of Sissi also marked the inauguration of Egypt's New Administrative Capital.
The $58 billion project to build Egypt's New Administrative Capital was announced by Sisi in 2015. The main aim of the project was to relieve the highly congested and polluted capital, Cairo. Cairo's population is around 20 million, reaching an unsustainable level. The new capital will include a new presidential palace, a new parliament building, space dedicated to foreign embassies, and new buildings for various government administrations. The New Administrative Capital is about 45 Km from Cairo and 60 Km from the Suez Canal.
